After the Rock, Before the Repair:
Your part in getting a good windshield repair

If you have gotten a chip or crack in your windshield, it is a good idea to get it repaired as soon as possible, preferably within a few days. In the meantime, there are a few things that you can do to help slow the damage and improve your chances of a successful repair.

  1. Protect the Damaged area. Put a piece of packaging tape or scotch tape over the repair, on the outside of the windshield. This will help to keep the area dry, and prevent dirt from getting into the damaged area.
  2. Skip the Car Wash. This is especially true for car washes that apply a "windshield treatment." Windshield repair resin needs a clean area to grip to, and if the damaged area has chemical residue in it, the repair will likely not work.
  3. Keep your vehicle cool. Park in the shade, and crack the windows on hot days. This will help to keep heat from building up inside. Avoid using a windshield sunscreen, as these actually reflect light back onto the windshield. The result is that the windshield gets hotter and is more likely to break.
  4. Avoid vibrations. Such as slamming doors, hoods and trunk lids.
